Archivio di Stato di Torino

Where Piazza Castello, 209, Torino

The State Archives of Turin is divided into four sections. The original Treasury Counts of Savoy dates back to the twelfth century. Preserved in the Middle Ages in Chambery, from 1416 the Archives of the Savoy dynasty was divided in two, with a section intended to keep titles and legally and politically documents important for the dynasty. The current Archive has two locations: the original one in Castle Square (Court Section) and that of Via Piave (United Chambers). The Museum was established in 1873 to carry out a precise political and ideological plan: the celebration of the glories of dynastic House of Savoy and the exaltation of the political project that culminated in the establishment of the unified state, a process in which the establishment of a deep connection between past and this served as a element of legitimacy of the new national identity. The important Library complex of the State Archives of Turin comprises three major parts: the Old Library, the core of which comes directly from the ancient ducal collections, which houses manuscripts and printed books from the Middle Ages to the 1800s; the whole of the New Library, which includes printed volumes between 1800 and the thirties of the last century; the Current Library, consisting of printed books from 1945 to today. The Archive organizes events, educational activities and the High School of Archiving, Paleography and Diplomacy.
