Chiesa di San Matteo

Where Via Federico D'Aragona, Lecce

It was built in the second half of the seventeenth century, on drawing of Achilles Larducci Salo. It replaced an old chapel dedicated to the apostle Matthew XV, which was attached on a Franciscian convent. The laying of the foundation stone was laid in 1667 by Bishop Luigi Pappacoda, and was finished in 1700. The facade is characterized by a contrast of lines; it alternates the lower of the convex surface order to the upper concave one. Larducci resumes the stylistic model implemented by Francesco Borromini in the facade of the Roman church of St. Carlo to the Four Fountains. The interior has an elliptical nave.
