Villa Comunale (Villa Reale o Real Passeggio di Chiaia)

Where Via Giorgio Arcoleo, Napoli

The Comunal Villa is a major garden of the city and extends for a kilometer between Victory Square and Republic Square. The first core, a double row of trees adorned with fountains, dates back to 1697, when the Viceroy ordered the construction of "a walk" from the Gate of Chiaia and the Neapolitan Crypt. The area was converted to urban garden at the end of '700, by the will of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and by Carlo Vanvitelli. During the Napoleonic period, the Villa was enlarged and redesigned by the architects Stefano Gasse and Paolo Ambrosino, who added paths and flower beds in the Romantic style. With the completion of Via Caracciolo, since the seventies of the nineteenth century, the Villa was also extended to the sea, with a new main entrance on Victoria Square. During the restauration of 90s, in a break with the previous Neoclassical style, have been redesigned the chalets, the green and the lighting. Planted with oaks, pines, palms and eucalyptus trees, the garden is also home to monuments, fountains and buildings of various ages, including: "Fountain of the Cup of Porphyry" (called "the Paparelle"); "Fountain of Saint Lucia", sculpted by Michelangelo Naccherino and Tommaso Montani (1606); "Fountain of the Rape of Europe", by Angelo Viva; the eighteenth-century Neoclassical mythological sculptures from Reggia di Caserta (works by Solari senior and Violani); the Temples of Torquato Tasso and Virgil, works by Stefano Gasse; the "Casina Pompeiana"; the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station and the Palace of the Press Club.
