Complesso di Santa Maria Nova

Where Via Sacra, Roma

St. Mary Nova is one of the treasures of Appia Antica: three acres of countryside dotted with ruins, revolving around an old farmhouse, excavated and made available from 2006. The main building, with three floors, is a resident of early twentieth century, which incorporates a tower and a Medieval farmhouse set to a powerful Roman cistern, located between the mounds of the Orazi and Curiazi. During the archaeological excavations were found several structures from Roman times: whether paved road, a cemetery of the second century AD, and buildings relevant to the large complex of Quintili Villa, including a thermae with two mosaic floors in black and white tiles, perfectly preserved, depicting a gladiator and a referee in the act of handing the victory, and four horses faced in pairs around a tree.
