Ponte dell'Accademia

Where Ponte dell'Accademia, 8788, Venezia

The Academy Bridge is the southernmost of the four bridges crossing the Grand Canal in Venice. Connects St. Vidal with the former Church of St. Mary of Charity. For three hundred years, the Rialto Bridge was the only point of pedestrian crossing on the Grand Canal, until he felt the need for two additional crossings: one at the new railway station, the other to the south. In 1852, the English engineer Alfred Neville proposed a bridge to a single horizontal girder, fifty meters of light. This Bridge, called Charity Bridge, was quickly built and opened to the public, but soon began to present static problems. Until a new stone bridge was built, in a single month, a temporary wooden Bridge designed by Eugenio Mozzi that, given its strength, has not been replaced. The wooden Bridge needs a continuous maintenance and expensive, therefore, the Venice City Council has invited tenders for a new project in stone.
