Palazzo della Prefettura

Where Piazza del Plebiscito, 26, Napoli

Ferdinand I had the idea to construct a building to house the foreigners who came to visit the Bourbon court. The Palace of the Guest, the current seat of the Prefecture, was built in 1815 by the Neoclassical architect Leopoldo Laperuta (1771-1858), on the area of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. In 1890, designed by Antonio Curri and the participation of 43 employees between sculptors and painters, at the ground floor was built Caffè Gambrinus. The main facade is characterized by two registers: one basement, with mezzanine and workshops, in which there is the monumental portal in piperno flanked by pairs of Tusca columns, and one upper register, characterized by gian order. The interior houses a small courtyard.
