Fontana del Nettuno

Where Via Ruggero Leoncavallo, 17, Napoli

Commissioned by the Viceroy Enrique de Guzmán, it was completed in 1601, on the direction of Domenico Fontana. Made at the Arsenal harbor and initially settled there, in 1634 it was moved to Saint Lucy, where it was enriched by the sculptures by Cosimo Fanzago. A few years later, the Viceroy ordered that the shift to the Largo delle Corregge. Mutilated at the time of the revolt of Masaniello (1647-1648), it was the subject of restoration by the Iodice and Francesco Castellano. After centuries of restorations and additional shifts, in 2014, the Fountain was restored and rebuilt in Municipio Square. Circular in shape, is surrounded by a balustrade with four tiers decorated with tendrils tunnel and lions, from which the water flows. Two sea monsters pour water in the central basin below (composition by Pietro Bernini), while in the center, on a rock, two nymphs and two satyrs hold a cup on which stands Neptune with trident, by Michelangelo Naccherino.
